Barrier Free Housing

I am often asked what makes a property "Barrier Free". Unfortunately for us we take the term "Wheelchair Accessible" on our MLS listings too literally, only to find out the property doesn't come close to meeting our client's needs. Here are some guidelines to assist you:

  • Electric outlets should be 18" above the floor.
  • Light switches thermostats, and the fuse box should be 42" form the floor.  Doors and corridors should be at least 36" wide.
  • Bathrooms should have easy accessibility for disabled clients.  Showers should be easily accessible by wheelchair clients.
  • Grab bars should be readily available.  Toilet seats should be 17" to 19" high.
  • Tilt-over mirrors should be available at sinks.
  • All faucets and door handles should have lever
  • Sinks need to have at least 29" of roll-under space.  The rims of the sinks should be no higher then 36".
  • Stove controls should be in front or side mounted in a straight line for easy reach.
  • A spray hose should be mounted near the sink so it can reach the stove and oven to easily fill pots and pans.
  • All appliances should be front loading with controls on the front.  Refrigerators should have side-by-side doors.
  • Carpets should be close weave with maximum pile thickness of ½".
